The Hundred Years War was fought out across the chateaux along the river.

In pre-history early man sheltered in caves leaving wall paintings to give a glimpse of life lived in the mists of time.

Les Jardins des Marqueyssac – beautiful gardens to explore with panoramic views of the Dordogne. There are evening candlelight soirees in summer and plenty of interactive play zones for the kids.

Les Jardins du Manoir D’Eyrignac – formal 18th century gardens just up the road with evening picnics and music in summer.

Les Jardins de Cadiot in Carlux – ten individual gardens in different styles nearby – perfect for a stroll.

Chateau Castlenaud – exhibition of the art of warfare in the Middle Ages – a family favourite. *

Chateau Beynac – built in the 12th century. Exquisite tapestries and 15th century frescoes. *

Chateau de Commarque – dates from the 12th century, as the base for a local templar army.

Gouffre de Padirac – crystalline cave complex stalactite and stalagmite formations linked by gondola.

Roque St Christophe – a huge Troglodyte cave complex about a half mile in length, this majestic cliff rises vertically above the Vezere valley to a height of over 250ft.

Grotte de Lascaux – amazing copy of the neighbouring cave paintings dated from 15,000BC *

Ophorus – Guided wine discovery tours in Saint Emilion, Medoc and Bordeaux as well as excursions in and around Sarlat *
